Acacia Creative Studio and Sideau® Bring Floral Magic to RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025

Pushing the boundaries of floral sculptures in a sustainable way.

Floral DesignsFloral EventsSustainability

When it comes to reimagining floral design with a fresh twist, Rachel Kennedy and Xue Wang from Acacia Creative Studio know a thing or two. For the fourth year running, they’re bringing their signature style to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and 2025 is shaping up to be their boldest chapter yet.

Acacia Creative Studio has always had a thing for pushing boundaries. Their work feels less like traditional floristry and more like sculpture in bloom — think large-scale installations, raw textures, and designs that tell stories about nature’s rhythm and fragility. Based out of South Yorkshire but with strong ties to China, Rachel and Xue carry their passion for sustainable techniques wherever they go, teaching and creating with a real eye on the future of floral design.

Here’s what you can expect to see from them, and from Sideau® — the 100% natural alternative to floral foam — during this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show (20-24 May).

Tropical Dreams With a Heartbeat

This year at Chelsea, Acacia Creative Studio is taking on a big one: the RHS letters themselves. If you’ve ever been to the show, you know these aren’t just any letters. They’re icons. And Acacia is ready to breathe some serious life into them.

Imagine a wash of tropical color, shifting from warm kumquat orange through equatorial reds, into soft pinks — a rhythmic, daring ombré that captures movement and energy. Intertwined vines, flashes of light and shadow, bold textures… It’s not just an arrangement. It’s an experience. The RHS letters won’t just stand there this year — they’ll pulse with life.

Sustainability at the Core With Sideau®

But there’s more to this design than meets the eye. Acacia Creative Studio has long championed eco-friendly practices, and for their 2025 installation, they’re partnering with Agra-Wool International — inventor of Sideau®, the 100% natural alternative to floral foam.

Sideau® is a game-changer. Made from basalt, a volcanic rock, it offers the structure and support designers need without the microplastic nightmare that comes with traditional floral foam. It’s compostable, reusable, and incredibly easy to work with. For florists who’ve been looking for a sustainable switch without sacrificing creativity, Sideau® feels like the future is finally catching up to the craft.

For Rachel and Xue, using Sideau® isn’t just a nice touch — it’s essential. Their entire ethos revolves around respecting nature while celebrating it. Incorporating Sideau® into their Chelsea Flower Show design just made sense. It’s not about greenwashing or jumping on trends; it’s about genuinely working with materials that honor the natural world they’re so inspired by.

What to Expect at RHS Chelsea Flower Show: A Riot of Color and Form

If the sneak peeks are anything to go by, visitors to the 2025 show can expect an installation that’s raw, bold, and full of life. Picture blooms like Alpinia purpurata, Protea varieties (including Silvia and Pink Ice), Heliconia, and Strelitzia, all weaving together in a colorful dance. Tropical leaves, Banksias, and hints of delicate Cape Greens will add depth and texture.

Rachel Kennedy, co-founder of Acacia Creative Studio:

“We are honored to return to Chelsea for the fourth year in a row. This year, we are creating an ombre of tropical blooms that will capture the imagination and inspire visitors. Our goal is to create something truly unforgettable and continue to push the boundaries of floral design.”

With Sideau® as the foundation, every flower, vine, and frond will be supported naturally, giving the team of 10 designers from Acacia Creative Studio the freedom to create sweeping shapes and organic movement without compromise.

Rachel:

“We have a fantastic team, many from China, who will be in workshops with us in the week before the show to gain all the skills for this build.”

The iconic 2-meter-tall RHS letters take centre stage at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, making a unique and vibrant 6-meter-wide design essential not only to captivate visitors but also to embody the spirit of the RHS and communicate the essence of the show. This is your first selfie moment!

Rachel:

“We will also be designing the two large urns at the top of the Sweetingham Steps. These are on the main boulevard, taking a prime spot at the top of the staircase. The design will be architectural and feature also British-grown flowers, showing off the success and vibrancy of locally sourced material.”

More Than Just Flowers: Storytelling at Its Best

For Acacia Creative Studio, flowers are only half the story. It’s the emotion, the connection to the natural world, that gives their work its real power. Every curve of a vine or layering of color hints at something deeper: the heartbeat of nature itself.

Their past installations have included a 5-meter woven rush tunnel and a 3-meter-tall oversized vase — both unforgettable, not because they were ‘perfect’, but because they made people feel something. Expect the same this year. Only bigger. Bolder. And more mindful.

And Rachel Kennery is already looking beyond the RHS Chelsea Flower Show:

“We will also be designing for the Strawberry Hill House festival in September, which is exciting! We love these opportunities to break from the day-to-day and be more creative and free to express ourselves!”

Sustainable Designs Matter at RHS Shows

As florists, it’s easy to get caught up in the beauty of it all. But there’s a bigger conversation happening about how one creates. Sideau’s role in designs like Acacia’s shows that it’s absolutely possible to craft breathtaking work without leaving a trail of waste behind.

Choosing sustainable materials isn’t about compromise anymore. It’s about leveling up the craft. Rachel and Xue are proving that with their Chelsea installation — and in doing so, they’re leading by example for florists around the world.

Visit London, Catch It Live

If you’re lucky enough to be at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show somewhere between the 20th and 24th of May, don’t miss Acacia Creative Studio’s interpretation of the RHS letters. You’ll see color, creativity, and sustainability colliding in the most natural way — with Sideau® quietly, solidly, holding it all together. Because real beauty doesn’t have to cost the Earth.

Art in Bloom DC for 2025

Art in Bloom DC 2025 returned to the historic Anderson House from March 20-23.

Thirty-eight talented artists used branches and blooms to create stunning floral art interpretations, celebrating the intricate art and architecture housed within Anderson House. Art in Bloom DC 2025 has gained immense popularity and acclaim, joining the ranks of similar shows across the country, including San Francisco, North Carolina, Indiana, and Boston. These visually captivating events not only delight the senses but also attract sponsors and visitors, solidifying their status as cultural highlights.

This Washington D.C. show marks the fifth year that the Anderson House, a Beaux-Arts mansion built in 1905, has invited the region’s best florists to design exquisite floral arrangements and installations. Once the winter home of diplomat Larz Anderson and his wife Isabel, Anderson House now serves as the headquarters for the Society of the Cincinnati, a historical organization honoring the American Revolution.

Expertly produced by Margo Bright Occasions, Atelier Ashley Flowers, and the Society of Cincinnati Events at Anderson House, the event showcased a collection of seriously talented florists from the D.C. area who brought spring to life with their breathtaking designs.

Art in Bloom DC has become my favorite event to produce,” says Margo Bright, renowned for her wedding designs, bar mitzvahs, and special event expertise. “It invites so much creativity, and I love getting to work with such inspiring floral designers in one space.”

Here are some highlights of the artists’ exceptional floral art interpretations for 2025.

INTERPRETATIONS OF PAINTINGS

What made this arrangement so lovely is that it didn’t just keep to red, white and blue roses but added the copper roses which also complemented the vase. The flowers stood proudly and were so dignified.

Look at how dreamy and draping all these delphiniums and other flowers used by Wilding Flowers Co and Kentlands Flowers & Bows. Perfect color for the painting’s dress. The florists used anthuriums, orchids, allium for the purple punches, hydrangeas in blue tones, ferns, Palms and dried grasses.

Focusing on the white ethereal dresses in the painting and creating a bed of red and then a triangular shape of white flowers was inspired. Mokara orchids added a uniqueness as did the white lilies and delphiniums. A collage in same color themes really worked here.

Interesting that this florist used the orange red tones in the painting only in the roses but complemented the arrangement with purple delphiniums and lots of greenery. So seasonal to also use the cherry blossoms and the lisianthus blooms as well to add airiness.

Petals by the Shore’s Kelly Shore is known for seamlessly creating floral environments where the vases and the flowers blend together in harmony. This vase has an interesting shape which both enhances and softens the flower arrangement which used wild and fun branches to draw from the grey tones in the painting. Shore partnered with The Floral Source and used All American Grown flowers.

The red draping amaranthus was an inspired choice for this floral arrangement. The gloriosa flowers were a perfect addition to give respect to the decorated Marquis – but simultaneously also added the needed modernity.

This blue and white arrangement had touches of other colors to create depth. The use of greenery to create air on top complemented the draping orchid giving it heft and beauty. Among the flowers were white roses, tulips, ranunculus, dusty miller, clematis sea pods, butterly anemones – my favorite – sweet pea, hydrangeas and blue delphinium

INTERPRETATIONS OF DECORATIVE ARTS

Ruscus has never been used better in this lovely arrangement that allowed the tall slender greenery to just spill down the table. It wasn’t an accent but the theme of the arrangement – allowing the flowers on top to blend into the decorative bowl. The use of spray roses, chrysanthemums and white geranium palms and blue carnations all mixed so well.

Happy pink flowers in moon-faced shapes made this arrangement as well as peonies and magnolia.

These copper roses just enthralled. Mixing it with the copper vase was pitch perfect. Really well done. Amaranthus was nice touch as well.

Once again we are seeing how greenery isn’t a character actor anymore. They can be equal stars in an arrangement. Dogwood, vines, spring branches added to the impact along with anemones, tulips, orchids and straw flowers

Moss, draping fritillaria, hyacinth in lovely shades of wine purple, mushrooms and orchid blossoms created meadow but modern effect

These arrangements evoked peaceful and inspiring vibes. Great idea for people to realize that arrangements by the pool can be a focus with bold colors as well. Tang Austin Florals used butterfly ranunculus, heirloom daffodils, roses and seasonal branches. Green Hydrangea Flowers used cherry blossoms, scabiosa and calla lily and grasses for the Buddha decor. Overall this partnership created art that truly calms and delights.

A profusion of tulips in orange tones worked in this design and added nice pops of colors.

The profusion of pink roses and swirling greenery shows that a variety of the same color can still be interesting. But House of Jeanne Flowers recognized you need good ingredients such as these lush garden roses.

Holly Chapple is known for loving roses and also using an array of colors in all her designs. Boring is not in her vocabulary.

This arrangement takes your breath away. The garden roses are plump and the draping of greenery and branches along with pops of smaller yellow flowers created a memorable arrangement.

Concrete Rose Floral created a shower of fun with this arrangement in a big urn. Delphiniums and roses once again sure are a great combo.

This arrangement beguiled with its burst of yellow flowers and spring feeling. Loved the mimosa and how the artist used branches to provide wispiness.

Collectively these florals created a must-go to gathering at a museum worthy of looking at with fresh eyes. That is one of the many benefits that flowers do – move us to see life’s beauty in new ways.

NYBG Orchid Show 2025 – Ode to Mexico

By Jill Brooke

From February 15 through April 27, 2025, The Orchid Show: Mexican Modernism, the 22nd edition of the annual celebration of all things orchids at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), carries visitors to the vibrant setting of Mexico. Set off on a journey where the fusion of tradition and contemporary artistry takes center stage amid awe-inspiring displays of orchids and other eye-catching supporting plants. Wander through lush landscapes brought into vivid relief with thousands of flowers that showcase diverse ecosystems and rich culture. Among bright arrangements of orchids in settings inspired by the bold, multicolored designs of Mexican modernist architect Luis Barragán (1902–1988), come visit a paradise of tropical beauty—without ever leaving the Bronx.

Barragan was a Mexican architect and engineer. His work has influenced contemporary architects visually and conceptually. Barragán’s buildings are frequently visited by international students and professors of architecture.  Barragán won the Pritzker Prize, the highest award in architecture, in 1980, and his personal home, the Luis Barragán House and Studio, was declared a UNESCO  World Heritage Site.

Mexico’s wide range of ecosystems contain 10–12 percent of the world’s species, making it one of the largest biodiversity hotspots on Earth. This includes more than 1,300 orchid species, about 40 percent of which are endemic—they are not found anywhere else in the world.

What this means is that colorful structures were created to house a massive amount of beautiful orchids. Each and every one is tended to by a staff dedicated to botany in what is one of the best research centers in the world. Previous shows have been inspired by the work of Jeff Leatham as well as others.  This show is routinely the highlight for many and catnip to visitors. A lovely way to spend an afternoon. There are also weeknight activities for drinks and strolling in a garden setting as well as lectures.

Philadelphia Flower Show Highlights from “Garden of Tomorrow”

By Jill Brooke

The 2025 Philadelphia Flower Show announced its winners for  for the “Garden of Tomorrow” – and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) announced that Jennifer Reed, of Jennifer Designs Events, took the Best in Show for her enchanting installation called “Welcoming Wildlife Home.”

Jennifer Designs Best In Show Winner
Jennifer Designs Best In Show Winner

This whimsical floral exhibit features large animals and insects crafted from plant materials gathered at a dining table. It highlights the crucial role of wildlife in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and demonstrates how thoughtful plant choices and habitat creation support biodiversity and ecological balance.

“I never won Best in Show before,” said Reed, who has taken home many golds over the years.

Best in Show for Landscaping was awarded to Mark Cook Landscaping for their exhibit, “Signature of Time.”  This unique garden design reflects the journey of life through a blend of architecture, color, texture, and plants from diverse time zones. Tropical and perennial plantings evoke past experiences, while the evolving landscape showcases nature’s ability to transform.

The landscape exhibit receiving the second-highest number of points was Ishihara Kazuyuki Design Lab and Treeline Designz. Flowers for the future.

Other exhibitors showed how flowers are laboratories for possibility including this one from Robertson’s Flowers which I particularly loved.

The American Institute of Floral Designer’s (AIFD) installation was very sculptural in its feel. Liked how these artists used balls with just a few flowers to make an impact.

AIFD Display
AIFD exhibit

Bill Schaffer designs called their exhibit Nexus – the road to the future by respecting the past.

There was even an exhibit about the future of fashion using botanicals.

One installation was called “Skyward Bloom” by Lily Beelen. “The futuristic flower is an ode to the incredible ability of nature to create flowering beauty in the most difficult environments,” she says. “Five crescent-shaped petals unfurl elegantly around a central pillar. Each seed symbolizes a glimpse of a hopeful tomorrow.” We certainly like that idea and the installation.

Arrange’s “Thanks for the Meadow” was an exhibit that just delighted the senses with so many pops of colors. The variety of the flowers was designed to show how flowers are “a bridge to the community.”

Arrange Flowers Exhibit

“We are thrilled to celebrate the creativity and vision of the designers who brought this year’s Flower Show to life. Through cutting-edge design and thoughtful plant choices, these designers remind us that our gardens are not just reflections of today, but also powerful tools for creating more sustainable, biodiverse, and connected communities tomorrow,” stated PHS’s Vice President and Creative Director of the Flower Show, Seth Pearsoll.

Meanwhile, Pearsoll’s opening exhibit in the entrance was breathtaking as well featuring an array of spring flowers – circular alliums that looked like little planets, hyacinths and daffodils, and magenta orchids dangling from the sky in rectangular objects that looked both futuristic and inviting.

The 2025 Philadelphia Flower Show is taking place from March 1-9. The award-winning PHS Philadelphia Flower Show is the nation’s largest and the world’s longest-running horticultural event, featuring stunning displays by some of the world’s premier floral and landscape designers. Started in 1829 by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the Show introduces diverse and sustainable plant varieties and garden and design concepts. In addition to acres of garden displays, the Flower Show hosts world-renowned competitions in horticulture and artistic floral arranging, gardening presentations and demonstrations, and special events.

Among the other highlights were an ikebana exhibit and gardeners bringing in their favorite house plants to be judged by experts. Other flower categories were also included such as amaryllis. Plus a butterfly exhibition attracted many people to watch live butterflies float all around them and co-exist with humans.

One of the new additions to the show was Kimberly Hodges. The North Carolina artist creates logo-like flowers to be inserted in acryllic stands that are not only delightful gifts but works of art.

Plus there are many opportunities to not only buy bulbs – which I did – but learn about flower growing, planting and care. The show also invites amateur gardeners and schools to participate in their vision of the future.

As big as three football fields, the annual show is a wonderful way to spend the day and attracts 200,000 visitors each year. As I’ve said many times, this is the best flower show in the world.

TFF Partners with Philadelphia Flower Show to Highlight the Self-Care Benefits of Flowers

(San Marcos, CA)– That Flower Feeling (TFF) is thrilled to announce our participation in the prestigious Philadelphia Flower Show, taking place from February 28th to March 9th. The theme of this year’s show is Gardens of Tomorrow, and our exhibit will spotlight flowers, beauty, and its therapeutic benefits. “We are excited to inspire consumers to incorporate flowers into their self-care practices,” said Vanessa Leite, Director. “This event is a fantastic opportunity to create a memorable experience, encouraging attendees to share their love for flowers with friends and family and amplifying our message far beyond the show itself.”

That Flower Feeling is immensely grateful to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for generously providing the space, making this initiative possible. However, to turn this vision into reality, community support is crucial:

How You Can Get Involved:

NL: Celebrating National Tulip Day 2025

The start of the new tulip season was celebrated in Amsterdam on Saturday 18 January. National Tulip Day attracts around 20,000 visitors to the Dutch capital every year who come to admire the spring flower display in the giant picking garden.

Some 200,000 tulips in various colors graced Amsterdam’s Museumplein. After a brief opening ceremony, the public in attendance could pick tulips for free from 1:00 pm. The annual event marked Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary. Dutch tulip growers (TPN) set to work early in the morning to set up the picking garden in a record time of 3.5 hours.

Notable was the large number of foreign tourists who came to the Netherlands, especially for this ‘unique’ celebration, states the TPN team. Tulip grower and TPN chairman Arjan Smit reflects on a ‘successful’ day: “Even though we have been celebrating the National Tulip Day with a picking garden in Amsterdam since 2012, it’s still amazing to see all those people with big smiles on their faces. In times of great tension and uncertainty in the world, it is fantastic to create altogether such a positive, cheerful atmosphere with tulips.”

According to the TPN team, the Netherlands is the world’s largest producer of sustainably produced tulips. In total, there are some 375 growers who will collectively produce more than 1.7 billion tulips this season. Main export countries are the UK, Germany, France and Poland. Tulip season lasts until mid-May. The most popular and cheerful of spring flowers come in numerous varieties, shapes and colors.
