Seventy-five floral designers from across the country submitted photos of their floral design work for our jury’s consideration in this inaugural edition of the contest—the theme of which is “The Four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water.”

The four designers featured in this video were selected as finalists, and each of them received cut flowers from premier plant breeder Ball SB and containers of their choice from burton + BURTON, to create these designs.

Lavish Traveling Centerpiece https://floristsreview.com/lavish-traveling-centerpiece/ Mon, 15 Mar 2021 05:01:38 +0000 http://floristsreview.com/?p=19355 Playing a bit of a trick on the eyes, floral designer Erik Witcraft, AIFD, creates a stunning oblong candle centerpiece for a wedding reception. While the lush design appears to be a collection of four individual arrangements, it is a single horizontal unit. Featuring Alexandra Farms’ spectacular peachy-pink ‘Miyabi’ Wabara Garden Roses, the design also comprises spray garden roses, ‘Green Ball’ Dianthus and pepperberry. Check out the creative construction technique here. Sponsored by Alexandra Farms

Post-Wedding Brunch https://floristsreview.com/post-wedding-brunch/ Sun, 21 Feb 2021 13:06:30 +0000 http://floristsreview.com/?p=27078 The day after a huge wedding, it’s nice for everyone to mingle and catch up with a post-celebratory brunch. Watch as Erik demonstrates how he created a showstopper brunch buffet arrangement featuring flowers from Rio Roses perfect for such an occasion.

Materials used: 2 hors d’oeuvre stands with plates, rectangular design tray, fresh floral foam, waterproof adhesive tape, faux aspidistra ribbon, Uglu dashes, ‘Blushing Akito’ roses, ‘Ilse’ spray roses, soft pink carnations, lavender Japanese asters, ‘Stargazer’ lilies, soft blue belladonna (Rio Products), umbrella fern, Italian ruscus, English ivy, fatsia aralia leaves, and Japanese privet.

Step 1: Take four 1/3 sections of presoaked floral foam and wrap with faux aspidistra ribbon and anchor using Uglu tabs. Set on first plate. Insert roses in one cube, carnations in one, asters and spray roses similarly. Set aside.

Step 2: Set design tray on second plate. Stack first and second stand with plates allowing you to understand design clearance for lower design.

Step 3: Insert a variety of textural foliage including Italian ruscus, English ivy, fatsia aralia, and Japanese privet. Add ‘Stargazer’ lilies, ‘Blushing Akito’ roses, and soft blue belladonna to the lower design. (Rio)

Step 4: To finish, add floral component cubes to top plate of design. As another option, leave the top plater empty to serve hors d’oeuvres on and set floral cubes on satellite plates around the buffet area instead.

Classic White Bridal Bouquet https://floristsreview.com/classic-white-bridal-bouquet-2/ Sun, 14 Feb 2021 13:28:21 +0000 http://floristsreview.com/?p=27086 This luscious bridal bouquet takes a classic style and elevates it to a modern level. Here Erik utilizes wire rings, a sparkling wired-crystal garland, and the most incredible ‘Princess Miyuki’ garden roses from Alexandra farms and fragrant white peonies to create this beautiful and sparkly bouquet. Materials used: 5 – 6” silver metal rings, silver metallic wire, a wired-crystal garland, 12 gauge silver aluminum wire, bind wire, corsage tape, Oasis Uglu strips, white peonies and ‘Princess Miyuki’ garden roses (AF) Step 1: Create armature by connecting silver rings together using metallic wire anchoring them at their crossing points. Add wired-crystal garland over the surface of the armature allowing some of the garland to extend above the structure and create visual movement. Add 4 lengths of silver aluminum wire to the base of the structure to create the “handle” of the bouquet. Corsage tape to bind all the wires together. Step 2: Begin layering white peonies and ‘Princess Miyuki’ garden roses (AF) into the armature structure. Add as many as you would like pulling some of the crystal garland sections up to add dimension and visual movement in the bouquet. Once satisfied, secure the stems with bind wire. Step 3: Trim all the stems and wires to the desired length. Corsage tape over the base to prepare it for the diamond ribbon. Add Oasis Uglu strips at the base and attach the diamond ribbon around to conceal mechanics and add beautiful bling. Bind over the top of the diamond ribbon with silver bullion and anchor it well.

Dramatic Delphinium https://floristsreview.com/dramatic-delphinium/ Sun, 07 Feb 2021 13:14:43 +0000 http://floristsreview.com/?p=27081 This hi-impact design features Pantone’s color of the year with Rio Roses products such as dark blue delphinium and beautiful yellow roses. Learn the tricks Erik uses as he creates structure and style with unexpected elements.

Materials used: Metal design bowl, 6 short cardboard shipping tubes, faux aspidistra ribbon, double-sided tape, pan-melt glue, fresh floral foam, waterproof adhesive tape, aspidistra leaves, New Zealand flax, blue belladonna delphinium (Rio) ‘Brighton’ roses (Rio) yellow calla lilies, and yellow pincushion protea.

Step 1: Cover shipping tubes with strips of faux aspidistra ribbon. Attach with stapler and double sided tape to completely cover all of the tubes. Glue fresh flower stems inside 4 of the tubes on two sides with pan melt glue.

Step 2: Set floral foam into your container and anchor with waterproof adhesive tape. Set the 4 shipping tubes on stems into foam at different levels. Carve half round sections of foam on each side and add 2 additional tubes sitting on foam surface. Insert additional fresh variegated aspidistra leaves into foam and allow them to swoop around tubes and anchor with stapler.

Step 3: Form loops of aspidistra by piercing stem though surface creating a loop and tail. Insert multiple aspidistra loops in groupings at the base of the design. Insert tall blue delphinium belladonna (Rio) through tubes and into foam. Continue adding delphinium into tubes and outside as well as short lengths are base of taller tubes. This creates an illusion that the tubes are literally floating in the design.

Step 4: Insert ‘Brighton’ roses (Rio) in strong groupings at the base of the design. Create accordion flax chains but splitting a single flax leaf in half and weaving back and forth. (It’s kind of like paper chains we made as kids.) Insert into foam and knot to strong stems in the design.

Step 5: To finish the design, insert yellow calla lilies surrounding the structure and pincushion protea to add the final drama to the design.
