Japan: An interview with lily grower Hiroaki Morita https://floristsreview.com/japan-an-interview-with-lily-grower-hiroaki-morita/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 16:17:15 +0000 https://floristsreview.com/?p=887650

This is an interview with Morita Hiroaki, who grew lilies in Kochi Prefecture. Morita talked about the joys he felt every day as a lily grower, especially when someone who received a gift was pleased with the lilies, and how Kochi’s climate was extremely suitable for lily production.

He also talked about his long-held dream of producing “pollen-free lilies.” About 10 years ago, he made a request to a breeding company in the Netherlands, and the request was granted, and the product was then being commercialized in the form of the “River Series.” Pollen-free lilies, which did not pollute the surrounding area with pollen, were one direction for lilies that consumers would be pleased with, and Morita spoke of his passionate desire to create pollen-free lilies in a variety of colors.

Dutch Lily Days 2025 https://floristsreview.com/dutch-lily-days-2025/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 16:11:17 +0000 https://floristsreview.com/?p=887647 From June 3 to 6, a total of 13 lily bulb exporters opened the doors of their test greenhouses to their customers from far and wide. The exporters test the properties and quality of their bulbs in these greenhouses. They also test the potential of different varieties for a future-proof bulb sector. The international visitors primarily discussed the resilience and availability of lily bulbs.

During the 13th Dutch Lily Days, sector partners from around the world gathered to examine and judge the developments and novelties on display. Just like in past years, thousands of visitors headed towards 13 Dutch bulb-exporting companies, to spar with them about current themes and look ahead to future trends in the sector.

Challenges
All in all, the mood was positive, with a promising season ahead. Besides showcasing various lily varieties in the test greenhouses of the thirteen participating companies, there were also talks about the challenges the industry faces. These include issues like exchange rates, the US tariffs, and the public debate on crop protection in bulb cultivation in the Netherlands.

Exporters feel that it is important to conduct an open dialogue with all parties involved in the chain. The opening ceremony of the Dutch Lily Days took place this year at De Jong Lilys in Andijk. A former chair of LTO Nederland, Sjaak van der Tak, spoke about the lily sector and the promising steps that breeders, growers and exporters could take to contribute to a sustainable future in the Netherlands and abroad.

Pollen free lilies
Additionally, the growing demand for pollen-free lily varieties was another key topic of conversation. The popularity of double and pollen-free lilies is on the rise. Nearly all participants now feature one or more of these types. The Rose Lily was among the first to become available, and since then, many new varieties have been introduced. The demand for these remains strong.

The world of the lily
The event was again a great opportunity for colleagues to discuss the innovations and challenges of the lily market. They immersed themselves in the world of the lily for an entire week and discovered how far the sector has gone with developing more sustainable and resistant varieties, what new varieties there are, and what the market opportunities are for pollen-free and double-bloomed lilies.

Felipe Vega, Plantas de mi Tierra:

Costa Rica: “Our Lilygrass is grown with care, and it shows in every leaf”

In the Poás region of Costa Rica, you’ll find the nursery Plantas de mi Tierra, where Felipe Vega and his dedicated team cultivate a remarkable foliage variety: Lilygrass, or Liriope. This grass, prized for its beauty, is a favorite in floral arrangements around the globe. For the past year, it has been an integral part of Adomex’s OrcaGreen collection.

Thanks to the mild climate and fertile soil, the foliage in Costa Rica reaches lengths of up to 80 centimeters. The bright green leaves are long, narrow, and slightly curved. In the summer and fall, the plant has purple flowers. In Adomex’s assortment, two types of Lilygrass are included: the dark green Liriope muscari and the variegated Liriope variegata.

Family Business with a mission
Felipe Vega, founder of the nursery, grew up among the coffee plants. His love for plants began when he first visited a Liriope nursery as a young boy. “That caught my attention,” he says. The interest eventually led to starting his own business. “Starting out was a real challenge. I had to learn a lot to become successful. Now I have a company that exports foliage to Europe and provides jobs for many people.”

The collaboration with Adomex began a few years ago when Felipe had the opportunity to export his foliage to the Netherlands. “Adomex saw the quality of our Lilygrass and became interested. Their buyers decided to visit us, get to know our company, and purchase the product directly. That was truly a blessing for Plantas de mi Tierra.”

Sustainability
The nursery operates with a focus on sustainability. By using environmentally friendly methods, the ecosystem remains balanced, and the quality stays high. “The health of the plants is paramount. We work with careful selection and good fertilizers, paying attention to every detail.”

For Adomex, the collaboration means a stable supply of high-quality Lilygrass. “We work every day with love for the plant and for nature,” concludes Felipe. “Our Lilygrass is grown with care, and it shows in every leaf.”

OUR FARMS

Rosas del Cotopaxi

Rosas del Cotopaxi was the first farm to be developed by Native Blooms. Situated in the Cotopaxi district, south of Quito, at an altitude of 2.850 meters, the area is well suited for long stem production and vibrant colors. After the success encountered with Rosas del Cotopaxi, Native Blooms acquired the Exxide farm in Tabacundo.

Exxide

Exxide is situated in Tabacundo, in the Cayambe district, north of Quito, Ecuador, and was actually one of the first rose farms in the country. At an altitude of about 2,800 meters, its mild climate favors the production of reds and colors.

We would also like to point out that both farms are located on one of the earth’s closest points to the sun, providing near perfect growing conditions where our world renowned roses are produced. Being closer to the sun maximizes luminosity helping our roses to grow straight, fast and tall and give blooms their bright tones.
